How often have you heard on the news where Public Safety has to evacuate city blocks because of a ruptured gas line? It's all too common. Dan Edward Phillips, Broker, Eureka CA addresses a very practical approach to preventing this from happening to you. Checkout his blog below.
Call for locates of underground utilities before starting any project that requires excavation on your property. The number is usually found in the front of your telephone book. Usually, one call will be enough to contact all the utilities with buried facilities in your area. And do it early, to make sure they will not have a conflict between their plains and the location of an underground utility.
It is also a good idea to discuss with a utility if they intend to cover an underground line, such as pouring a concrete patio over a gas line. The utility may want to reroute the line or protect it.
The cost to repair a severed telephone or CATV buried service wire is not cheap and the cost to repair a severed gas line is very expensive.
I advise my clients to take photos of the locate marks or flags as soon as the locate has been completed. They will be useful if there is damage to an underground line and there is any conflict as to what was marked and where it was marked. I advise them to try to include some immovable object in their photos to document the exact location of the marks or flags.
