Counting My Blessings After The Storm

It is all we heard and listened to for a week. A hurricane, super storm, Frankenstorm was heading our way. Prepare, prepare, prepare. Hunker down was the mantra here in Maryland. Hunker down is what I did.

After the storm

The last few storms had not been kind. Electric would go out within minutes of the first winds. Trees all around me would crack and fall. Debris would be found all over the yard. Electric would be out for days and days. Nerves would be frazzled as we coped, with so many others, of living daily without lifes amenities we have all become so accustomed to.

One of the blessings of this storm was the fact that we had time to prepare. It was not a sudden, appear out of nowhere, kind of storm. There was time to make sure the pantry was full, a survival kit was in place, plenty of water was on hand, bathtubs full as we are on septic and well, and plenty of candles, gas, and firewood.

Another blessing is we did not lose electric. Eery really as I have always lost electric. Being able to follow the news as the storm progressed was a novelty and overwhelming actually. Seeing and hearing the devastation all around me and up and down the coast was heartbreaking. How lucky I was became more and more obvious as the day turned into night.

But the biggest blessing of all was the news that my family was safe. My family of first responders. Yes I have children and grandchildren who were called to duty during the height of the storm. Medics, police officers, and firemen are who my family is. When storms like Sandy hit our area they are the essential personnel who are called to serve and protect. All are tired but safe this morning after the storm.

After the storm

I have lived through many a hurricane in my lifetime and each one becomes more nerve wracking as technology takes over how they are reported. Today we hear the blow by blow, minute by minute updates as the day ticks on. In yesteryear I heard nothing but the roar of the wind and the hammering of the rain.

Which is better I am not sure. I am just counting my blessings that the storm has passed.
